How to: Make your own terrarium

Terrariums are a great way to keep plants indoors. They add a splash of colour to your home and require only minimal care.

They’re super easy to do, making them a great crafty project for all members of the family.

First, create the base:

Start by adding a layer of pebbles to the bottom of your terrarium; roughly 2 - 3cm thick. This will help with drainage.

Top this with a scattering of charcoal. This will absorb any sitting water and prevents bacteria build-up and any nasty smells.

Next, layer on the potting soil:

Make sure to do a generous amount so that the roots of your plants have plenty of room to grow.

Now its time to add your plants:

Put the biggest plant in first, making sure it has enough space to grow.

If you have more, add the rest. Remember not to put them against the glass.

Add a scattering of shells to the surface:

This will also help with drainage while giving a nicer appearance than the soil below.

Now it’s time for decoration:

We like to add some stones to add some height variety. You can be as creative as you like; why not add a couple of mini toys to create a little scene?

And there you have it, your very own terrarium!

Caring for your terrarium

  1. Your terrarium will thrive in a bright spot but make sure to protect it from any direct light as this will scorch your plants. If the plants become straggly, they most likely need more light.

  2. Some closed terrariums are self-watering as they maintain a level of humidity. If you have a closed terrarium, make sure the condensation doesn’t fill the whole container; open the lid and give the sides a wipe. If it is getting too moist, move away from the light.

  3. This terrarium is open and so will require watering; but not too often. When the soil is dry to touch, give each plant a dessertspoon full of water.

  4. Prune your plants as and when is needed. Cut any leaves that are dead or mouldy or that touch the sides of the glass. This will make them grow back fuller.
