Christmas at Home Starts in the Garden
A real Christmas begins outdoors. The smell of pine. The texture of fir. The glow of soft lights against greenery. Your garden already holds everything you need to make your home feel alive this season.
Forget plastic décor and tinsel. Use what nature gives you. Every branch, cone, and leaf tells a story of the year gone by.
1. Make Your Own Wreath
Gather small branches from pine, fir, or holly. Bend them around a wire ring or a simple circle of willow. Fix them with garden twine.
Add pinecones, berries, dried oranges, and a short ribbon. Hang it on your door for a natural welcome that smells of winter.
If you want to learn in person, join our wreath making demonstration with Kim on Saturday 6th December. You can watch, ask questions, and pick up tips to make your own wreath at home.
Spray your finished wreath lightly with water every few days to keep it fresh, and keep it out of direct sunlight.
2. Build a Table Centrepiece
A Christmas table looks best when it feels alive.
Lay fresh greenery along the centre. Mix textures: pine needles, bay leaves, and ivy work well. Add dried fruit slices, cinnamon sticks, and candles in glass jars.
Keep it low so guests can see each other across the table.
After the holidays, compost the greenery. Nothing goes to waste.
3. Create a Natural Garland
Garlands are simple but striking. Use ivy, laurel, or eucalyptus. Thread them together with jute or garden twine. Hang them over mantels, windows, or fences.
Add small pinecones or dried seed heads for texture.
If you have fairy lights, thread them through for a soft evening glow.
4. Forage with Care
Take only what you need. Leave enough berries and shelter for wildlife.
Avoid pulling from protected areas or public land without permission. Look for wind-fallen branches instead. Your garden will often give you all you need.
5. Bring the Garden Indoors
Small touches make a difference. Fill jars with sprigs of rosemary or eucalyptus for a gentle scent.
Place a bowl of pinecones near a window. Add a few twigs sprayed lightly with water to keep them fresh.
Even a single branch in a vase adds quiet beauty.
6. Add Warm Light
Fairy lights or candles add the final touch.
Use warm tones. Avoid flashing or bright colours. Let the natural greens do the talking.
If using candles, keep them clear of dry foliage.
7. Keep Decorations Fresh
Greenery lasts longer in a cool place. Mist it every few days. Avoid putting wreaths above radiators or fireplaces.
When the season ends, return everything to the garden. Compost it. Let it feed the soil that will grow next year’s plants.
